Gratin Dauphinois (French PotatoGratin)🧀

Gratin Dauphinois is a creamy, cheesy potato dish that’s
baked to perfection with a golden, crispy top. It’s rich,
comforting, and a crowd favorite. This dish is a great
accompaniment to meats like roast chicken, beef, or lamb.

Ingredients (for 4-6 servings) :
For the Gratin:
● 2 lbs (about 900g) potatoes, peeled and thinly sliced
● 1 cup (240ml) heavy cream
● 1 cup (240ml) whole milk
● 2 cloves garlic, minced
● 2 tbsp butter (plus extra for greasing)
● 1 1/2 cups (150g) gruyère cheese, grated (or a mix of
Gruyère and Parmesan)
● Salt and black pepper, to taste
● Nutmeg, freshly grated (optional)

Instructions :

  • Prepare the Baking Dish:
    ● Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
    ● Butter a large baking dish (about 9×9 inches or a
similar size) generously. You can also rub the dish
with a cut clove of garlic for extra flavor, if you like.
  • Prepare the Potato Mixture:
    ● In a saucepan, combine the cream, milk, and garlic.
Heat over medium heat until it begins to simmer.
Be careful not to boil it.
    ● Add salt, black pepper, and a pinch of freshly
grated nutmeg (optional). Remove from heat and
    set aside.
  • Layer the Potatoes:
    ● Arrange the thinly sliced potatoes in overlapping
layers in the prepared baking dish.
    ● After each layer of potatoes, pour a little of the
cream mixture over them, and sprinkle with some
    of the grated cheese.
    ● Repeat the process until all the potatoes, cream
mixture, and cheese are used up. Make sure the
final layer is covered with cream and topped with
    the remaining cheese.
  • Bake the Gratin:
    ● Dot the top of the gratin with small pieces of butter.
    ● Cover the baking dish with aluminum foil and bake
for 45 minutes. After 45 minutes, remove the foil
and continue to bake for another 20-25 minutes, or
until the top is golden and crispy, and the potatoes
are tender when pierced with a fork.
  • Serve:
    ● Remove the gratin from the oven and let it rest for
    about 5-10 minutes before serving.
    ● Garnish with fresh parsley, if desired, and serve
    hot!
